Clomid is a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), which  works by blocking estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus. This keeps estrogen from stopping the production of gonadotropins, which it would normally do.

It could also directly stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. In short, Clomid gives the bodybuilder a controlled and reliable way to treat himself after a cycle, especially to get the testicles back to their normal size and function (it brings your balls back).
